Before extracting the engine start with by disconnecting the clamp that is attached to the negative terminal of the battery, and followed by draining the engine oil. With the 3.7L engines, first, you need to take off the engine cooling fan along with the shroud then the intake manifold. If so endued, remove skid plate air cleaner dust cover and cross member if necessary. Place an engine hoist or support fixture at the lifting eyes on the engine; lift the engine sufficiently so that the weight is off the engine mounts then unbolt the through-bolts used in the engine mounts. For both the 4w.D and 4.7L models, owners are advised to pull off the front axle assembly. Subsequently, the oil pan bolts and nuts should be withdraw, with attention made to the stud placements and the oil pan should be secondary separated from the block without employing prying force as it would mar the sealing surfaces. In case the oil pan has stuck it is advisable to give the side of the oil pan a light hit with a rubber mallet until the gasket seal is broken. Disconnect and un-install the oil pump pick-up tube and it's gasket, and along with windage tray the pick-up tube is to be dropped into the oil pan. Before installation, clean the oil block and pan mating surfaces and check that the bolt holes are clear, examine the gasket of the oil pan for signs of wear and tear and replace it if necessary. Insert the pick-up tube and oil pan gasket/windage tray into the oil pan, locate the oil pan over the engine, and always employ a fresh O-ring on the pick-up tube and tighten the pick-up tube - to oil pump bolt successively. Once the fasteners have been installed torque all bolts in a cross wise to the prescribed value. Put and lock the support brace, which is in between the transmission case and oil pan, to the appropriate torque on its bolts. Last, repeat the process of removal, add oil to the engine, install new oil filter and start the engine for some time with making sure that no leakage is observed.
