- Q: How to remove and install an oil pan on Jeep Patriot?A:Before removing the oil pan it is necessary to interconnect the negative terminal of the battery and then jack up the vehicle and put it on the jackstands. Sump the engine oil, unbolt and remove the drivebelt splash shield along with the air cond. compressor, which should be supported off the rack by a wire or rope by this stage and remove the compressor bracket. Subsequently, the oil pan bolts have to be unscrewed and the oil pan has to be unbolted from the block, a putty knife or gasket scraper has to be used to pry the heads off without applying pressure in between the block and the pan as this may damage the sealing surface. Scrape off all the old gasket material from the oil pan and sealing surfaces and then wash the surfaces clean, and inspect the pan for any signs of distortion, warp or bend which must be corrected by replacing the pan. Clean the gasket surfaces with a cloth containing brake system cleaner. For installation, put RTV sealant in the joint of cylinder block to front cover at the oil pan flange in the 1/8 inch thickness and put a 1/8 inch width and 1/16 inch height of the RTV sealant on the sealing surface of the pan. Screw in the pan and bolts until they are just snug enough , do not over-tighten, and be sure to have the oil pan put on and tightened within 10 min after applying the RTV sealant. Overtighten the bolts on the oil pan to the torque recommended on the instructions and then you reverse the process. Top up the crankcase with the right quantity and type of oil, start the engine and check the region around the engine for oil, and finally for a road test to detect another round of leaks.
