    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to replace universal joints on a driveshaft on Jeep Liberty? Posted by Customer
    A:
Take the driveshaft to a repair shop for universal joint replacement. For 4WD models, replace the entire front driveshaft if CV-joints are damaged. Remove the driveshaft and snap-rings from the spider. Use a press or vise to remove the bearing caps. Grease the new universal joint bearings and install them into the yoke. Install the spider and bearing caps, ensuring not to damage the dust seals. Install the snap-rings and grease fitting, then fill the joint with grease. Reinstall the driveshaft.

    Q:
What tools and steps are required for replacing a universal joint in a driveshaft on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
A press or large vise will be needed for this operation and it recommended that the driveshaft be taken to a repair or machine shop for the replacement of universal joint at a reasonable fee. Start by following the above mentioned steps to remove the driveshaft. Retrieving the snap-rings on the spider; small pliers should be used in this process but in case of difficulties needle-nose pliers should be used. Place the driveshaft on an arbor press or put it on the workbench with help of the vise. Take a piece of pipe, or large socket with internal diameter of one of the bearing caps, put an ID smaller socket on another bearing cap. Either tap the cap lightly and use the vise or the press to slowly push it out or do what's shown below wherein you use the vise or the big pliers to force the cap out gently until it is almost out and then continue to remove it with the bare hands. Move the sockets to the other side and push the other bearing cap in the same way again. Apply grease on the new universal joint bearings and in case of any special instructions on lubrication when using the servicing kits, they should be observed. Place the spider in the yoke and screw in place one of the bearing caps to get the oil supply angle right if the new spider includes a grease fitting: it should be rotated to the opposite direction of the driveshaft. Place the spider over the bearing cap and screw partially the other cap in a manner that the spider and the bearing caps should fits firmly with remembrance not to bend the dust seals. Screw in the snap-rings and whilst doing so if there is a tough time in setting the snap rinds then hit the driveshaft yoke with a hammer so as to reduce tension and enable the snap-rings to be fet in the groove. To complete the assembly, screw in the grease fitting and also fill the joint with grease but this should not be done to an extent of overfilling since this will only lead to blowing out of the grease seal. Last, but not least fasten the driveshaft and torque the flange bolts to recommended value.
