Oxides of nitrogen, or NOx, are compounds formed in the engine when oxygen and nitrogen mix in the incoming air. When emitted from the tailpipe, NOx combines with other compounds and sunlight to create ozone and smog. The EGR system reduces NOx by recirculating exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold through the EGR valve and intake manifold, diluting the air/fuel mixture and cooling the combustion chambers to reduce emissions. The system consists of the PCM, EGR valve, and various sensors that determine when to open the valve. To replace the EGR valve in gasoline engines, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the EGR pipe flange and bolts, separate the pipe from the valve, remove the gasket, and clean the mounting surfaces. For diesel engines, remove the cover from the EGR crossover tube, loosen clamps, remove bolts, disconnect wiring, pry off the valve assembly, clean sealing surfaces, and replace gaskets. Diesel models may also have an EGR cooler located under the intake manifold or on the exhaust manifold.
