The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system on California vehicles is designed to recirculate a portion of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold, reducing combustion temperatures and decreasing the production of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The main component is the EGR valve, which is controlled by a back pressure transducer and an EGR solenoid. The transducer measures exhaust gas back pressure and varies the vacuum signal to the EGR valve accordingly. EGR is not allowed at idle, and its usage depends on engine temperature and driving conditions. Symptoms of EGR system problems include rough idling, stalling, and poor engine performance. To check the EGR valve operation, bring the engine to operating temperature, disconnect the hose from the transducer, connect a vacuum pump, start the engine, and apply ten inches of vacuum. The EGR valve stem should move and stay open if the system is working correctly. If the EGR valve is faulty, it needs replacement. Additionally, inspect hoses, connections, and EGR tube for leaks and clean EGR ports in the throttle body if necessary. To replace the EGR valve and back pressure transducer, disconnect the vacuum hose and remove the assembly, disconnect the crossover tube, remove mounting bolts, and clean mating surfaces before installing a new gasket. The EGR solenoid is located on the engine compartment firewall.
