The PCV system consists of the PCV valve and two hoses. The fresh air inlet hose connects the air filter housing to the valve cover (2.4L four) or to the front valve cover (3.3U3.8L V6). The crankcase ventilation hose (or PCV hose) connects the valve cover (2.4L four) or the rear valve cover (3.3L/3.8L V6) to the intake manifold. The PCV valve is located at the valve cover end of the crankcase ventilation hose that connects to the intake manifold.

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by scavenging vapors from the crankcase. It does this by circulating fresh air from the air cleaner through the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases and is then rerouted through a PCV valve to the intake manifold. The main components of the PCV system are the PCV valve, a fresh air filtered inlet, and the vacuum hoses connecting these two components with the engine. To maintain idle quality, the PCV valve restricts the flow when the intake manifold vacuum is high. If abnormal operating conditions arise, the system allows excessive amounts of blow-by gases to flow back through the crankcase vent tube into the air cleaner for normal combustion. To check the PCV valve's operation, with the engine running at idle, pull the valve out of the mount and place your finger over the valve inlet. A strong vacuum should be felt, and a hissing noise should be heard if the valve is operating properly. Cleaning the old valve is not recommended.

The PCV valve is located in the top of the valve cover on inline engines. On the 3.BLV6 engine, it is located in the left-side valve cover. On the 3.6L V6 engine, it's located at the rear of the right-side valve cover. For inline engines and 3.8L V6 engine, pull the valve from its grommet in the valve cover, then pull it from the end of the hose, noting its installed position and direction. On the 3.8L engine, the PCV valve is located in the left-side valve cover, near the ignition coil pack. For 3.6L V6 engine, squeeze the hose clamp and slide it back on the hose, then remove the two screws and pull the valve from the rear of the right valve cover. Push the valve into the end of the hose until it's seated. Inspect the rubber grommet or 0-ring for damage and replace it with a new one if necessary. Push the PCV valve and hose securely into position. On 3.6L V6 engines, tighten the screws securely. Later Inline six-cylinder models are equipped with a CCV system which performs the same function as the PCV system but uses a rubber fitting with a molded-in orifice which is pressed into a hole in the valve cover. The fitting is connected to the intake manifold by a plastic hose. If there is no vacuum at the end of the hose, turn off the engine, remove the fitting and clean the hose with solvent. Clean the fitting orifice if it's plugged. If the fitting or hose are cracked or deteriorated, replace them with new ones. Install the fitting and hose securely in the valve cover.
