The Evaporative emissions control (EVAP) system prevents fuel system vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. On warm days, vapors trapped inside the fuel tank expand and are routed through the fuel vapor vent valve and the fuel vapor control valve to the EVAP canister. The canister stores the vapors until they can be consumed by the engine. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) opens the canister purge solenoid under certain conditions, allowing intake vacuum to pull fuel vapors into the intake manifold. The EVAP canister is located underneath the vehicle, while the NVLD pump is located in front of the canister. The NVLD pump monitors the temperature and pressure of the fuel vapors to detect leaks in the system. The EVAP canister purge solenoid, controlled by the PCM, regulates the flow of vapors into the intake manifold. Common symptoms of a faulty EVAP system include a strong fuel odor and poor engine performance. To check for issues, inspect the fuel filler cap, EVAP hose connections, and the canister for damage or leaks. Excessive fuel vapor pressure can be detected by removing the gas cap and listening for pressure release. Professional diagnosis of the EVAP system requires a proprietary OBD-11 scan tool. The EVAP canister purge solenoid is located in the engine compartment, while the NVLD filter, EVAP canister, and NVLD pump assembly are located in front of the fuel tank. The NVLD filter can be removed without removing the canister, but the canister must be removed to access the NVLD pump. To remove the NVLD pump, squeeze the locking tab and rotate it counterclockwise.
