1990 Dodge Ramcharger Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a camshaft in 3.9L V6 engine on 1990 Dodge Ramcharger?
A: To do this, before removing and installing the camshaft the camshaft lobe lift should be contemplated. Starting with, disconnect the rocker arm covers and the intake manifold should be taken off as well. After that, remove the rocker arm and shaft assemblies, push rods and lifts taking note of each one in order to install them back at their original position. The distributor; the oil pump and the distributor driveshaft should be pulled out. Then remove the camshaft lock bolt, cup washer, fuel pump eccentric sprocket and the thrust plate make sure you have noted the position of the timing chain oil tab in order that you replace it in the same position. Draw out the camshaft using a long bolt-threaded into the fron end of the camshaft, while you are careful not to mar the bearings with the cam lobes. Coating the bearing journals and lobes with assembly lube or moly-base grease, offer the camshaft into the block and after installing it halfway to avoid bearing damage, then install the bearing. After the distributor drive gear has been installed, insert Chrysler tool no. C-3509 behind it to avoid pulling out the welch plug at the rear of the block, while tightening the chain and sprockets. The camshaft thrust plate and the chain oil tab must be arranged properly, after that, the timing chain, the sprockets, the fuel pump eccentric, the cup washer and the camshaft bolt should be installed. Find out the camshaft end play and check it against the Standard factory limits if it is out of limit then the thrust plate will require replacement. When the camshaft holding tool is slid off place the lifters back in position; new hydraulic lifters come with a new camshaft. The last few steps of installation are essentially inversed, to the steps that hold for removal. When a new camshaft is installed, pour one pint of chrysler crankcase conditioner or any equivalent into the engine oil to help in breaking the camshaft in; the mixture should remain in the engine for at least 500 miles.
