1990 Dodge Ramcharger Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a cylinder head in six cylinder engine on 1990 Dodge Ramcharger?
A: To have the cylinder head off, as a starter, take out the cooling system, next take off the air cleaner and take off the accelerator linkage. After that, remove the vacuum connected to the distributor and the carburetor and then the leads connected to the spark plugs. Remove the heater hose and by-pass hose clamps and the lead from the coolant temperature sending unit. Take off the pipe from exhaust manifold and, if must, disconnect the hose and take out the air tube or diverter valve vacuum line. Continue and disassemble the manifolds, the covering of the rocker arm, the shaft and the rocker arms, then, to remove sequentially the pushrods, which have to follow numbered to be fitted again. Where possible, use a hoist to remove the cylinder head or with assistants, simply lift the cylinder head off the block together with all the bolts. For installation ensure the cylinder head and block mating surfaces are clean and flat and a new cylinder head gasket must be ready. Place the gasket above the dowel pins on the block in a correct manner. Place the cylinder head gently and be very careful not to be applying force in any lateral direction that may cause the gasket to lift out, or worse pop out of place. Apply clean, light engine oil to the cylinder head retaining bolts and insert them in the block tightening them in order as listed to 35 ft-lb (47 Nm) then re-tighetning to 70 ft-lb (95 Nm). The rest of the decommissioning process is the opposite of the installation process.
