The components can be removed by disconnecting the battery ground cable and the cooling system must be drained. Secondly, unbolt the alternator and air cleaner with air filter after that, take off the emission control hoses and wires; it is advisable to make a note of the connections. Remove the carburetor fuel line, the distributor cap for models 400 and 440 and unbolt the
Intake Manifold, ignition coil and carburetor assembly. For 400/440 engines, take off the tappet chamber cover and the
Exhaust Manifolds together with the rocker arm and shafts. Stack the pushrods in order to make them recognizable when you have to put them back on the engines. For those models which are equipped with air conditioning, remove the compressor at the mount with the wood block between the bracket and engine block so that the cylinder head can clear the dowel pin with out draining air from the air conditioning system. Last of, take off the cylinder head bolts of the 318/360 engines and raise off the cylinder head(s). During installation, be particular to surfaces of cylinder head and blocks, they should be clean, flat and ready for the new gasket. Apply a thin layer of a suitable sealant on the new gaskets, place them right over the Dowel pins and very gingerly place the cylinder head in position by using a hoist or with the support of another person, make sure you do not drag the gasket left or right since this will dislodge it. Coat the threads of the bolts with thread sealing compound and screw them into the block then tighten them in the order mentioned below and slowly ratchet up to the final torque in a progressive manner to avoid distortion of the block.
