1992 Dodge Ramcharger Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Is it more practical and economical for home mechanics to purchase a replacement cylinder head rather than disassembling and reconditioning the original on 1992 Dodge Ramcharger?
A: New or 'remanufactured' cylinder heads can always be sourced for most engines from dealerships and auto-parts stores, so it is quite frequently slightly more advantageous for do-it-yourself mechanics to buy a new head than to strip down, inspect, and refurbish the part. The disassembly requires the removal of intake and exhaust valves with their components such as the rocker arm shafts and the rocker arms among others and to facilitate reassembly of the parts they are labeled or stored separately. The valves must be replaced together with its components for ease of reinstallation and labeling and storage of the valve is done to ensure that it is replace in the correct place, the valve spring installed height must also be checked against the standard set. The use of a spring compressor puts pressure on the valve keeping the following out of sight, the keepers, retainer, shield, springs and seal, spring seat, and valve. If a valve binds it might be necessary to deburr around the keeper groove. When all the operating valves have been removed and stowed away, the head should be washed and examined keenly. For reassembly, make sure the head is clean and if the head was taken for valve refurbishing, the inserts will be already installed on the valves and components where they are required. At spring seats the valves are set in place, lubrication is applied and new oil seals fitted and it is made sure that approximately 0.060-inch spaces are left between the seals and guides. Springs, retainers as well as keepers are then fitted in their appropriate locations and it is ensured that the keepers are properly locked. Lastly, the installed the valve spring height should be measure again and the rocker arms and shafts are put back again with the necessary lubrication applied on the pivot points.
