1991 Dodge Ramcharger Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft on a 44-8FD axle on 1991 Dodge Ramcharger?
A: To pull out or to replace the front axleshaft on a 44-8FD axle, firstly, lift the car and use the jack stands to support it in the right manner, and all the four tires of the car must be off the ground. Depress the brake calipers and pull the front wheel with the tire off; hang the brake caliper with wire on the side. Next remove six nuts that are connecting the splash shield and the spindle to the knuckle and the brake caliper adapter. Very gently disassemble the axleshaft and remove the seal and stone shield which are fitted on it. The lip seal should be fitted to the stone shield with the lip towards the axleshaft spline; the axleshaft is then inserted into the housing being careful not to damage the differential seal. For the left side, among others they include lifting the car, removing the front wheel and tire, also removing the brake caliper and finally, removing the brake disc and the hub assembly. The nuts that hold the splash shield and spindle should be unbolted, the vacuum lines connected to the disconnect housing assembly should be disconnected as well as the electrical connector, the disconnect housing cover assembly together with gasket and shield should be also detached. Removing with a ease the E-clips and loosening the two intermediate axleshaft from the shifted motor and shifted fork, the interlinked axleshaft is slid through the axleshaft seal. Take off the collar of the shift, put a drain pan below the differential housing and undo the differential cover. Slide the inner axleshaft to the center and take out the C-lock from the groove appropriately on axleshaft and use inner axleshaft tools to remove the inner axleshaft. Remember the removal of the needle bearing and seals need special tools. To remove, the same tools are required to reposition the inner axleshaft into the housing, and replace the C-lock, and shift collar. Pass through the intermediate axleshaft through the seal without any harm on the seal after that fit a new O-ring to the shift motor. Insert the shift motor back in the disconnect housing in such a manner that the shift fork offset is towards the differential end, and then fit the E-clips. Last but not the least you put back the disconnect housing cover assembly and gasket making sure that the shift fork fits well into the groove of the shift collar as a finishing touch to the whole process of installation you would reverse the process of removal.
