1998 Chrysler Cirrus Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What steps should be taken for thorough cleaning and inspection of the cylinder head and valve train components during an engine overhaul on 1998 Chrysler Cirrus?
A: If you do a good job of cleaning the cylinder head and related valve train components and then inspecting them you can determine how much work you must do on the valves while reconditioning the engine. If the engine has been overheated to a point it's badly affected, then the cylinder head is certainly warped. Remove all traces of old gasket material and sealing compound from the head gasket, intake manifold and exhaust manifold sealing surfaces but use a brass scraper to avoid damaging the aluminum sealing surface. Clean up all the concentrated scale from the channels, and sweep through the numerous holes with a moderately abrasive bristle. An adequate size of the tap should be used to clean the threaded each hole of corrosion and thread sealant while, in case of availability of compressed air, blow off debris from the holes. The cylinder head must also be cleaned using the solvent and then dried with the help of compressed air so as to dry all holes and other recessed areas. The idea of decarbonising chemicals may be helpful but must be used appropriately. First, remove and clean the rocker arms, hydraulic lash adjusters, spacers and shafts . Do not mix up the parts, and be sure to dry them out. To avoid confusion clean all valve springs, spring seats, keepers and retainers one valve at a time. These deposits should probably be scraped-off tightly to clean but ware more cautious with the valve heads and threads, use a motorized wires brush, while handling valves do not interchange the heads and stems you will need a set for each. Check the head for cracks, leakage in coolant passages, and other forms of damage and, if required, take help from an automotive machine shop. The head gasket mating surface and the intake and head mating manifold surfaces should also be checked for warpage which, if beyond acceptable limits should be resurfaced. Check the seats, the locations of which are evidenced by grey patches, for signs of pitting, cracking, or burning: the valve stem to guide clearance is measured with the help of a clamping dial indicator base. Look over each valve face for slight traces of 'head' and tail geometries, signs of distortion, cracks, pits, burnish area, and measure the margin width of each valve then replace that which has got thin margin. Each valve spring must be inspected for wear and pits, and its free length must also be checked in order not to be sagged. Check for squareness on each springs each spring by standing on a flat surface and replace distorts or sagged springs. Check the spring retainers and keepers for signs of wear and crack and replace any that are substandard since failure during engine use renders lots of harm. If the inspection shows that the valve components are in bad state and beyond limit for replacement, re-fix the valves at the cylinder head and carry out the other valve servicing procedures.
