2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install timing chains, sprockets, and the oil pump in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: To dismantle the timing chains and sprockets one has to take out the oil pan, gasket/windage tray, and the pick-up tube. Then, its time to the primary timing chain tensioner/oil pump bolts followed by the removal of the tensioner. Subsequent to that, remove the rest of oil pump bolts, and very carefully push/apply pressure on the oil pump housing in order to come out from the crank flats on the engine. To inspect, first, remove the cover of the oil pump by unscrewing it and then lifting it off; second, clean all the components with solvent; third, inspect for wear and damages on all the components but note that; the oil pressure relief valve and its spring are an integral part of the oil pump housing and if removed the part maybe damaged. Check for the following clearance of various oil pump parts by using the straightedge, feeler gauge, and the micrometer while comparing the result with the standard clearance. If any of these clearance is out of specified tolerances, then refer the complete assembly of oil pump to next higher assembly. To prime the oil pump, apply petroleum jelly on the rotor cavities, after that install the oil pump and tighten all the bolts up to the required torque. When installing, place the rotor flats against the crankshaft nats, and force the oil pump in place against the block. Place the primary timing chain tensioner over the oil pump and fit the pump-to-block bolts and tighten the bolts to the recommended tightness. The rest of the installation is done in the sequence of removals' reversal.
