Chrysler Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Axle Shaft on Chrysler Imperial?
    A:
To remove the wheel cover, front hub nut cotter pin, nut lock, and wave washer, loosen the hub nut with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the lug nuts, front wheel, hub nut, and big washer. If removing the right axle shaft from a vehicle with unequal length axle shafts, remove the speedometer drive gear prior to removing the right axle. Remove the steering knuckle-to-balljoint clamp bolt and disconnect the stabilizer bar from the suspension arm. Pry the lower balljoint stud out of the steering knuckle. Grasp the outer CV joint and the steering knuckle and pull the steering knuckle out to separate the axle shaft from the hub, being careful not to damage the CV joint boot. Pry the inner end of the CV joint out of the differential with a large screwdriver or pry bar. Prior to installation, clean the wear sleeve on the axle shaft outer CV joint and the seal in the hub. Lubricate the seal lip and fill the seal cavity with grease. Apply grease to the wear sleeve seal contact area. Apply grease to the splines at each end of the axle shaft and insert the inner end of the shaft into the transaxle. Push the steering knuckle out and insert the outer splined shaft of the CV joint into the hub. Insert the balljoint stud into the steering knuckle, install the clamp bolt, and tighten it. Reattach the stabilizer bar and install the speedometer drive gear. Install the wheels, spacer washer, and hub nut, and tighten the nut securely. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts. Tighten the axle shaft hub nut and install the wave washer, nut lock, and a new cotter pin. To check the axle shaft position, measure the distance from the inner edge on the outside of the boot to the inner edge inside the boot on both axle shafts at the lower edge. If the dimensions are not as specified, loosen the mount bolts and reposition the engine to obtain the specified axle shaft lengths. If the engine cannot be moved enough, check for damaged or distorted support brackets and side rails. Adjust the shift linkage if necessary.
  • Q: How to remove and install an Axle Shaft on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
Before disassembling of the axle shaft, the front wheel lug nuts need to be unscrewed, the car has to be lifted and properly positioned on jackstands and the wheel has to be detached. Second, unscrew the hub nut cotter pin and then take the old cotter pin also, because in the process of assembly, a new cotter will be required. Remove the lock and the spring washer from the axle shaft hub nut and using a large socket together with a breaker bar, loosen the axle shaft/hub nut. In case the vehicle has an anti-lock brake system, remove the harness of the front wheel speed sensor and place it to one side. While it is not required to drain the transaxle lubricant prior to the removal of the axle shaft, it is preferred, should the transaxle be close to the lubricant-change requirement. Pull the tie-rod end free from the steering knuckle, unscrew the balljoint that attaches it to the steering knuckle then use a prybar to force the lower control arm apart from the other component. To free the axle shaft from the hub splines: strike the end of the axle shaft gently with a soft-faced hammer, if it is stuck a puller may be required. Draw out on the steering knuckle to disengage the axle shaft from the hub and swing the outer end of the axle shaft down. If any leakage is observed on the axle shaft, these usually occur at the differential seal, then the seal will be requiring changing once the axle shaft has been removed. When inserting the needle bearing, for a non-turbo right axle shaft use a prybar against the inner joint and pry it off the transaxle side gear and retaining clip, or tap the inner joint off the intermediate shaft with a brass punch in a turbo model. Do not pull on the inner joint with the axle shaft in order to prevent cases of damaging the part. This one requires a little more care not to over bend the inner joint or to tear the axle shaft boots off. The same must be done for the left axle shaft; however, when doing this, care must be taken not to pull on the inner tripot joint. If the vehicle has to be shifted when the axle shaft is removed, put a large bolt with the washers through the hub. If a leaking axle shaft seal was identified, there is a seal replacement procedure possible. For installation reverse the removal steps and also apply an equal layer of multi-purpose grease on the splines of inner joint. Before pressing the snap-ring home against the transaxle side gear, hold the axle shaft straight out and press in sharply, then attempt to pull the axle shaft out. Remove any debris at the threads of the axle shaft outer CV joint, apply the spring washer and tighten the nut to the recommended torque, and while doing this it was important that you also tightened the hub nut. Insert the nut lock and another cotter pin; turn both of the ends round the pin to the extent of 90 degrees at least. Last, fix the wheel and lugs then drop the vehicle, tighten the lugs to the required amount and also check the transaxle level; add if necessary.
  • Q: How to replace an axle shaft in a rear axle assembly on Chrysler Town & Country?
    A:
Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from moving. Remove the rear wheels, brake drums or discs, ABS sensors, and the rear hub/bearing assembly. Suspend the rear brake backing plates. Remove any brake line and parking brake cable fasteners attached to the axle. On models without ABS, disconnect the rod that is attached to the bracket on the axle for the proportioning valve. Support the axle with a floor jack. Remove the shock absorber lower bolts. Remove the track bar-to-axle bolt and nut. Remove the stabilizer bar retainers from the axle. Remove the axle plate bolts. Carefully suspend any brake line brackets held in place by the axle plate bolts. Carefully lower the axle assembly. Place the lower leaf spring isolator in the correct position on the axle. Raise the axle assembly while aligning the isolators and mounting brackets on the axle with the locator post on each leaf spring. Install the axle plate and bolts. Reinstall any brake line brackets that are held by the axle plate bolts. Install the stabilizer bar retainers. Install the lower shock absorber bolts but do not tighten them yet. Install the track bar bolt and nut but do not tighten them yet. Reattach any brake line or parking brake cable fasteners removed from the axle. Install the hub/bearing assemblies and all brake components. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts. With the vehicle on the ground, tighten the track bar and the lower shock absorber fasteners. If any brake lines were disconnected, bleed the rear brakes before placing the vehicle back in service.
