Dodge Avenger Ball Joint

In the Dodge Avenger cars, the Ball Joint is an essential component of the suspension functions and also bears direct relation to the steering mechanism being associated with the control arms and the steering knuckles. This component enables the car to rotate or swivel in various directions and this makes it possible for the car to respond to the condition on the road and the command of the driver as given through the steering wheel. Basically made of steel, the Dodge Avenger Ball Joint comprises of a bearing stud and socket, the former of which is encapsulated in a rubber boot that acts to shield the ball joint from damage that arises from exposure to dirt while at the same time ensuring oil is supplied adequately to the bearing stud. Specifically, it is possible that Dodge Avenger can have different Ball joints, such as loaded and unloaded type. Loaded ball joints are responsible for withstanding the weight of the vehicle whereas the unloaded ball joints are only responsible for holding the alignment of the vehicle. Nevertheless, Ball Joints are not exempt from wearing out after sometime due to wear and tear and in particular, lack of lubrication may cause noises and unusual wear of the tires. Currently the Dodge Avenger has fixed Ball Joints and replacement options of variable Ball Joints that give better direction control and thus makes the car more stable on the road.

Dodge Avenger Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a faulty ball joint on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
Before you take off the wheel, loosen its lug nuts and axle hub nut, raise the car, and use sturdy jackstands to hold it in place. Next, remove the brake caliper and disc. Remove the two parts holding the wheel speed sensor: its clip from the knuckle, and its bolt. Pick up the sensor handlebar-style, and unhook it from the knuckle. Take off the nut connecting the ball joint to the control arm. If the ballstud turns easily, hold it steady with an Allen wrench before using a balljoint tool to divide the ball joint from the control arm. Gently move the ball joint close to the drive axle and slide it off, being cautious not to stretch too far into the inner CV joint. If the splines get stuck in the hub, use a puller to push the axle forward, then use wire or rope to hold it in place. Because of a small opening in the knuckle's ball joint cap, put a drift punch in the hole to take off the snap ring. Put the ball joint press tools in place, choosing the right attachments, then you can take the ball joint out of the knuckle by tightening the press tool. Installation goes the other way: replace the ball joint stud nut, then tighten every attached item.
