For replacement of a shift cable, shift the vehicle in to park then disconnect the negative battery cable from the remote ground terminal or battery. Release the shift cable from the shift lever by using a trim panel tool or flat bladed screwdriver and remove the bracket and pull the cable loose from its connection at the bracket. Pull the center console, and at the shifter assembly, give a pin and disconnect the shift cable housing at the clip as well as the cable at the bracket. Lift the car and put jackstands securely then, remove the grommet on the floor and pull the shift cable out of the hole. Loosen the cable gently from the retainers under the vehicle and then take it out. For installation the process is just the reverse of the above mentioned process to be followed where the grommet must be properly installed to make it a perfect fit and it must be lubricated in case required. For adjustment, the vehicle has to be parked in an open flat surface, the parking brake has to be engaged and the gear lever has to be shifted to the park mode before turning off the key. Tighten the shift cable adjustment lever bolt at the transaxle shift lever with the shift lever at the transaxle in the Park position, which engages the parking pawl. Further, turn the adjustment lever bolt to the stipulated torque setting, determine the smoothness of shifts, and guarantee the possibility of engine startup only in the Park/Neutral modes. Last, power the transaxle through all gear shift positions to test the shift control cable and adjust if required.
