Q: How to Replace an Expansion Valve in an Air Conditioning System?
A: Have the air conditioning system refrigerant discharged and recovered by an air conditioning technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the air filter housing. Remove the right drain tube from the windshield wiper assembly for access to the valve. Remove the nut securing both line fittings to the valve and remove the lines while discarding the seals. Plug all openings quickly to minimize contamination. Remove the mounting fasteners for the valve and then remove the valve while discarding any other seals. Again, plug all openings. Note: On models equipped with a temperature sensor mounted lo the expansion valve, remove the electrical connector from it and then remove the sensor fasteners and sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to install new 0- rings onto the line fittings and lightly coat them with the correct refrigerant oil. Note: Only use O-rings that are designed specifically for A/C system applications. Have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged it. Remove the rear heating and air conditioning housing. Carefully remove the foam insulation from around the expansion valve. Remove the nut that holds one line fitting to the valve and remove the line while discarding the seal. Plug all openings quickly to minimize contamination. Remove the fasteners that hold the other line fitting and plate to the valve, separate it from the valve and then remove the valve while discarding any seals. Again, plug all openings. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to install new 0- rings onto the line fittings and lightly coat them with the correct refrigerant oil.
