Dodge Colt Timing Belt

The Timing Belt in Dodge Colt automobiles provides for the proper coordination of the crankshaft and the camshaft with the former's piston movement thus timely opening and closing of the engine valves. This is usually done by a rubber belt made up of fibers that is driven by crankshaft and takes action at the camshaft(s). That is why Timing Belt also sometimes directly drives water pump for instance. In various years of production for the Dodge Colt models, the Timing Belts have undergone improvements where these belts exhibit curves on the teeth to provide more strength and reduce the level of sound which is produced. Easily the most apparent transition is that older engines used to engage gears, however, with the advent of Timing Belts, gains have been made such as lower costs and progressively less friction. It becomes crucial for Timing Belt to be checked often and fixed as soon as it is due for replacement, given that an unfixable Timing Belt can have devastating effects on interference engines.

Dodge Colt Timing Belt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to properly remove and reassemble the timing belt and associated components on Dodge Colt?
    A:
Using a socket spanner on the crankshaft pulley centre bolt, turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on its compression stroke, which can be verified by removing the upper section of the timing belt cover to align the mark on the camshaft sprocket with the mark on the belt cover backing plate. Mark which belt tooth is engaged in which camshaft sprocket notch, then release the alternator mounting and adjuster link bolts, pushing the alternator towards the engine to remove the drive belt. Unscrew the small bolts to withdraw the crankshaft pulley, then unbolt and remove the water pump pulley and fan blades, followed by the lower section of the timing belt cover. Unscrew and remove the crankshaft sprocket bolt, requiring the removal of the starter and jamming the ring gear to release the bolt. Release the Timing Belt Tensioner mounting bolt and adjuster nut, moving the tensioner to relieve the belt of all tension before retightening the adjuster nut. Slip the timing belt from the sprockets and pull off the crankshaft outer sprocket, using an extractor if necessary. Unbolt and remove the tensioner, then unscrew the plug from the base of the left-hand side of the cylinder block and insert a screwdriver to jam the silent shaft, allowing the oil pump sprocket nut to be unscrewed and the oil pump sprocket to be removed. Remove the bolt securing the sprocket to the opposite silent shaft, then take off the silent shaft belt tensioner and slip off the silent shaft timing belt. Remove the second crankshaft sprocket, using an extractor if tight, and then remove the sprocket from the silent shaft. Begin reassembly by fitting the sprocket to the silent shaft and then the crankshaft inner sprocket, aligning their marks with those on the front casing. Fit the timing belt B that drives the right-hand silent shaft, keeping it taut between the sprockets on the side away from the tensioner, then fit the tensioner B ensuring the pulley flange is furthest from the front casing and the bolt centre is offset towards the crankshaft sprocket. Fit the oil pump sprocket and screw on the nut, aligning the oil pump sprocket timing marks and inserting the screwdriver into the plug hole in the cylinder block to ensure correct alignment and restrain the silent shaft while tightening the oil pump sprocket nut. Fit the timing belt tensioner, engaging the spring, and push the tensioner towards the water pump to allow the timing belt to be fitted without tension. Fit the outer sprocket to the crankshaft and check that all sprocket marks align with their corresponding marks on the front casing or camshaft sprocket. Fit the timing belt by engaging it first with the crankshaft sprocket, then the oil pump sprocket, and finally the camshaft sprocket, keeping the belt taut and ensuring sprocket timing marks remain aligned. Withdraw the screwdriver from the hole and refit the plug, then fit the crankshaft pulley to prevent the timing belt from riding off the sprockets during tensioning. Release the tensioner nut to apply tension to the belt, pushing the tensioner lightly towards the adjuster nut to ensure full engagement of the belt teeth with the sprockets, then tighten the tensioner nut followed by the bolt. Using a spanner on the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft through exactly 360° in its normal rotational direction without turning it backward. Release the tensioner bolt and nut, retightening them in reverse order, and verify the timing belt adjustment by applying thumb pressure. Fit the two sections of the timing belt cover, withdrawing the crankshaft pulley again to do this, and then fit the water pump pulley and fan blades before fitting and tensioning the alternator drive belt.
