The fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit module includes the fuel pump inlet strainer, the pump, an internal fuel filter, the fuel pressure regulator, and the fuel gauge sending unit. This section covers the removal and installation of the complete module, which is removed as a complete assembly. You cannot replace any of the components separately. If any component is defective, you must replace the entire assembly. To begin, relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the fuel tank. Clean the area surrounding the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit to prevent dirt from entering the tank. Use a hammer and brass drift to tap on the lockring and unscrew it. Carefully remove the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit from the tank. Inspect and replace the large rubber gasket if necessary. The fuel pump inlet filter is attached to the bottom of the fuel pump module. Clean it with solvent and an old toothbrush, avoiding the use of a wire brush. If unable to clean the inlet filter, replace the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit assembly. When installing the module, position it with the electrical connector terminal facing forward and the fuel outlet pipe pointing toward the left side of the vehicle. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.
