To remove the crankshaft, the engine must be taken out of the automobile. Prior to removing the crankshaft, however, it is necessary to measure its endplay using a dial indicator or feeler gauge. The main bearing cap bolts are then unfastened and the main bearing cap assembly is gently lifted away from its position. Another person could now easily lift out the crankshaft from the engine. Cleaning and inspection of both the engine block and crankshaft precede installation. Original inserts are withdrawn whereas bearing surfaces are cleaned up on which new upper and lower main journal bearings will otherwise be installed ensuring that oil holes match accordingly. Then, lay down a crankshaft with thrust washers set on right main journal inside and check main bearing oil clearance by means of Plastigage.Such action may require replacement of different bearing inserts as maybe , Once the clearance is correct, the Plastigage is removed and the crankshaft is lifted out of the cylinder block. Clean moly-base grease or engine assembly lubricant must be applied onto bearing insert faces when they go back into place again since after that, put your crank-shaft back in cylinder block. Finally, the rear main oil seal is installed.
