In the fuel injection system of the vehicle, horns, starter and fog lamps, relays are used to convey electrical signal to components using a low current control circuit to regulate a high current power circuit. A faulty relay will result in the improper functioning of the linked component; most of the commonly used ones can be found in the engine hood fuse/relay container while the exotic ones are beside the interior fuse box at the dashboard. If a faulty relay is suspected it can be removed and tested using the following procedure or can have to be taken to a dealer service department or any authorized repair shop and the relays have to be replaced as a set if they are faulty. Most relays in these automobiles are ISO relays which have terminal numbers which show the connections in the circuit and functions of each terminal, there are two general terminal arrangements. Other terminals of the relay control circuit are connected with the relay power circuit so that the coil can develop a magnetic field tend to close the larger contact to supply power. Thus, most commonly, terminals 85 and 86 are the control circuit; however, certain connections are necessary in case of diode or resistor. Terminal 30 has connection with the battery voltage supply of the car, and terminal 87 has connection with the ground side. One method of testing the relay is to use the ohmmeter in order to check continuity through the control coil, and greater or lesser resistance values should be shown in each direction, if however, infinity is indicted the relay should be replaced. Continuity should now be tested between the power circuit terminals like before but with out continuity between terminal 30 and 87 when the circuit is de-energized. By using further another fused jumper wire to terminal 86 positive battery terminal and the other end of a fused jumper wire as ground at terminal 85 the relay should click, and continuity is last checked between terminals 30 and 87 should be checked. There are certain tests which reveal that the relay has not worked and in such a case it is replaced.
