Dodge Ram 3500 Timing Chain

The Timing Chain is the mechanism that interconnects the Dodge Ram 3500 vehicles crankshaft and camshaft, whereby one rotates in relation to the other to ensure appropriate valve timing that is imperative for the engine's running. Installed before the engine, this chain has moving parts that need lubication, and they are usually common in high c.c engines. The Dodge Ram 3500 vehicles make use of metal timing chains that have been adopted since the 1990's because of there less frequency of replacement as opposed to the rubber based timing belts. Timing chains in general are known to require less wear than other types and thus issues which might arise are on lubrication or the tensioner and chain guides. The advantage of the pushrod engines is that a short chain drive is used instead of a gear drive, which may cause noise and wear problems for the Dodge Ram 3500.

Dodge Ram 3500 Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Timing Chain and Timing Cover in Hemi engine on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
The procedure of removing the timing system is really intricate and should be done only by highly skilled individuals. If any errors are made, they can lead to severe damage of the engine. Remove timing chains from crankshaft sprocket. The battery cable should be disconnected before starting while the engine cover should also be removed at this point. Further remove air filter housing, air intake duct, drivebelt, cooling fan, upper and lower radiator hoses and finally air conditioning compressor is taken off lastly tieing it away from engine with A/C lines attached. Remove coolant reservoir, washer reservoir, drivebelt tensioner, idler pulleys, vibration damper, power steering pump, dipstick tube support bolt, oil pan, pickup tube and heater hoses. Also remove all the bolts for the front cover and timing cover making sure that the top alignment bushings stay with cover if not then this might cause an error in installation. Remove oil pump again. Reinstall a bolt into end of crankshaft turning it until crankshaft sprocket timing mark is at 6 o'clock position with Camshaft sprocket timing mark at 12 o'clock position apart from that retract tensioner and insert drill bit to keep it retracted. All three parts will be removed as one unit; camshaft sprocket assembly including camshaft sprocket, timing chain, and crankshaft sprocket as shown below. For inspection purposes, remove camshaft tensioner thrust plate, check camshaft phaser keyways for wear or damage as well as crankshaft sprocket teeth which may have become grooved or rounded over time. To install clean threads on camshaft sprocket bolt using thread locker compound before fitting anything else such as timing chains, phasers or chain gears onto block. Aligns gear up against woodruff keys in rear face of crank shaft; pushes it gently forward. To ensure protection against oil leakage, use RTV sealant only on the bottom where timing cover and oil pan meet. Cover timing chain engine block and oil pan as well. Finally, run engine, checking for leaks in coolant system and then add coolant.
