Jeep Grand Cherokee Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch on the Jeep Grand Cherokee?
    A:
Don't confuse this problem with a faulty ignition switch or an ignition lock cylinder; it could be that the transmission shift cable is off the track regarding adjustment. Start by removing the negative cable from the battery and then take off the knee bolster, and upper and lower steering column. Push the brake pedal and turn the ignition lock cylinder by inserting the ignition key to it and shift the lever to the park position. Rotate the ignition key clockwise to the RUN position, insert a small punch, for example, of about flattened part of a standard pen into the hole for the ignition lock cylinder pin, push the pin inwards and, as a result, pull the ignition lock cylinder out of the steering column. Before inserting the ignition lock cylinder, tide the ignition key at the RUN position, thread the ignition lock cylinder into the ignition with its flats seated into the receptacle on the terminal of the lock cylinder bore, and turn it to the right until it locks into the position. As for the ignition switch, however, one has to remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and also to deactivate the air bag. The upper and lower steering column covers have to be taken off, then the ignition lock cylinder has to be withdrawn. Remove the screws that connect the clockspring electrical connectors and place the harness to the side. Three various screws have to be undone in order to detach the tilt lever mounting bracket, then: unplug the electrical connector for the ignition switch and, finally, unscrew the mounting screws on the switch. Twist the small locking tab in anti-clockwise direction with respect to the steering column and pull the ignition switch out. For models from 2014 and after equipped with Keyless Ignition Node (KIN) start switch, include the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s). On Durango models, the Start/Stop button is not fixed in any way and can be extracted from the instrument panel without removing the whole panel using just a small trim tool. Pull the center instrument trim bezel and again using the plastic trim stick, insert it at the gap where the steering column gap bezel is situated then pry it out until all the clips holding it are disengaged. Tilt the steering column down and pull the bezel and or the panel back as it is situated on the instrument. Take out the start switch bezel screws, then, pull the bezel forward and disconnect the electrical connector of the start switch. Last, take out the KIN start switch mounting screws and pull the module off the bezel, installation procedure is literally done in reverse.
