  Q: How to inspect and replace the pilot bearing on Jeep Wrangler?

  In some models, the flywheel used is of the dual-mass type and this structure has to be dismantled in order to replace the pilot bearing which is a needle roller type inserted in the rear of the crankshaft to act on the front of the transmission input shaft. The pilot bearing should be checked each time the clutch parts are pulled off the engine and if for any reason there is the slightest suspicion that the bearing is worn, it should be replaced. If the engine has been removed out of the vehicle, skip the subsequent steps do not apply. Start with the dismantling of the transmission and all the components that are associated with the clutch. When it comes to the pilot bearing, the bore should be checked for signs of wear or scoring, lack of or dry grease or indeed any signs of damage and if these are visible then the pilot bearing should be replaced. If recess is within a dark area, a flashlight can come in handy and assist in a visual examination of the area. It is pulled out with a special internal puller and a slide hammer; or with a solid steel bar of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the bearing. Make sure that the bar fits tightly into the bearing; it is then advisable to fill up the bearing and the region behind the same with thick grease to drive out the air. In the bearing bore insert the bar and then hit it with a hammer so as to push the grease to the back side of the bearings and then pop them out. If an internal puller is not employable, the recess behind the pilot bearing must be packed in heavy grease and a steel rod can be tried. If retainers are installed remove them to gain access of bearing, It's important to ensure that Cra nkhshft recess is cleaned of any grease. To put in the new bearing, stuff inside with grease and put on some more at the exterior of the bearing and carefully hammer it into the housing using a bushing driver or an appropriately sized socket; make certain that the seal is on the outside and the bearing is inserted straight. Last but not least, replace all the clutch components, the tranmission and all other parts taken out then ensure that all bolts and screws are tightened accordingly.
