Disconnect the negative battery cable and visually inspect the battery's state of charge using the indicator eye (if equipped). Charge the battery or add distilled water if needed. Use a hydrometer to check the specific gravity of the electrolyte in each cell. Perform an open circuit voltage test using a digital voltmeter, ensuring the battery voltage is above 12.5 volts. Use a battery load tester to evaluate the battery's ability to handle heavy amperage draw during startup and accessories operation. Cold temperatures may slightly affect the minimum voltage requirements. To test for battery drain, disconnect all accessories and check the current drain using a digital ammeter.
