    Q:
How to remove and reinstall rocker arms and lash adjusters in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Dakota? Posted by Customer
    A:
A special valve spring compressor from most aftermarket specialty tool manufacturers is required for this procedure, as the only alternative involves major disassembly of the engine and surrounding components by removing the timing chains and camshafts. This engine is a non-freewheeling (interference) engine, necessitating that the pistons be down in the cylinder bore before compressing the valve and spring assembly to allow for rocker arm removal. Before starting, ensure the transmission is in Park, the parking brake is applied, or the rear wheels are blocked, and remove the ignition coils and spark plugs. Remove the valve cover(s) and label and store the rocker arms and lash adjusters for reinstallation on the same valves. Rotate the engine clockwise by the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper bolt until the pistons are positioned correctly for rocker arm removal, starting from TDC number 1 on the compression stroke. For the 3.7L V6 engine, remove rocker arms from cylinders No. 2 and 6 with the No. 1 piston at TDC, then rotate the crankshaft another 180 degrees to remove the rocker arm from cylinder No. 1, followed by cylinders No. 3 and 5, and finally cylinder No. 4. For the 4.7L V8 engine, follow a similar process, removing rocker arms from cylinders No. 2 and 8, then No. 3 and 5, followed by No. 4 and 6, and finally No. 1 and 7. Use the valve spring compressor to relieve tension on the rocker arm for removal, and if only a few rocker arms or lash adjusters are being replaced, locate the corresponding cylinder number and rotate the crankshaft accordingly. After removing the rocker arms, pull out the lash adjusters and store them with their corresponding rocker arms. Inspect each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and damage, ensuring the rollers turn freely, and check the lash adjuster contact surfaces for wear or damage, confirming they move freely without excessive play. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring lash adjusters are installed first and are at least partially full of oil to minimize plunger travel.

    Q:
How to remove and inspect rocker arms and lash adjusters in four cylinder engine on Dodge Nitro? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the rocker arms. If the lash adjusters aren't already removed from the head, lift them out now, ensuring to keep the adjusters in order for proper reinstallation in the cylinder head. Inspect each adjuster carefully for signs of wear and damage, particularly on the ball tip that contacts the rocker arm. Since the lash adjusters can become clogged, consider replacing them if there are concerns about their condition or if the engine exhibits valve "tapping" noises. The lash adjusters must be partially full of engine oil, indicated by little or no plunger action when the adjuster is depressed. If there's excessive plunger travel, place the lash adjuster into clean engine oil and pump the plunger until the plunger travel is eliminated. If the plunger still travels within the lash adjuster when full of oil, it is defective and must be replaced. When re-starting the engine after replacing the adjusters, expect the adjusters to make "tapping" noises. After warm-up, raise the speed of the engine from idle to 3,000 rpm for one minute; if the adjuster(s) do not become silent, replace the defective ones.

    Q:
How to remove and install Camshaft and Lash Adjuster in Hemi engine on Dodge Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
To start with, relieve the pressure in the fuel system and disconnect the battery to remove the camshaft. After that, drain the cooling system and remove timing chain cover, timing chain, phaser, and oil pump. Then remove cylinder heads and radiator. Remove Lash Adjuster rail mounting bolts next and extract Lash Adjusters from bore of Lash Adjusters using a special tool or magnet. Before camshaft removal check endplay and then remove thrust plate of camshaft. Carefully pull it using a long bolt as handle while turning it. To inspect camshaft; look for discoloration on lobes, score marks on lobes, uneven wear on lobes, check bearing journals for wear on journals of bearings measure lobe height for each lobe of camshaft among others things such as this. Check shoves inside Lash Adjuster wall, Lash Adjuster seats valves along pushrod or roller. If new Lash Adjusters are going into engine, new camshaft must also be installed with them. With installation lube apply some lubricant onto both bearing journal as well as the hardened lobes of the camshaft before sliding its nose into place and installing thrust plate for it. Installation is followed by installation of timing chain, sprocket, lubricating Lash Adjusters then finally putting them in block. Finally complete remaining steps in checking if necessary filling coolant system oil filter starting engine checking leaks changing oil breaking components to other new ones that remain.

    Q:
How can a noisy lash adjuster and Rocker Arm be diagnosed and repaired in 4.0L V6 engine on Jeep Liberty? Posted by Customer
    A:
A noisy lash adjuster can be confined of when the engine is stationary and using a mechanic's scope or a rubber hose touching the valves and listening to the other end. Some of the normal sources of noisy valve lifters are debris causing blockage inside the lifter and inadequate oil flow, viscosity or pressure; it is therefore advisable to check the oil for fuel contamination, level, cleanliness and viscosity before going to conclude that the lifters are bad. Not to let the rocker arm assembly fall over, not to put parts in disarray and to avoid placing the assembly on the lash adjusters, as this would cause damages as well as the intrusion of air. Start by unscrewing the valve covers and paint or draw on the rocker arms so that you can easily fit them when replacing the bolts of the rocker arms should be loosened in the reverse sequence with which they were tightened. There are intake and exhaust rocker arms, and the rocker arm shafts have to be removed , to do this, two items: one of them is a 4 mm screw with the nut, the washer and the spacer to pull out the dowel pins, located in the shaft supports; the pins have to be replaced after that. Take off the rocker shaft with reference to the identification notches which should be in the right direction on the engine. Visually examine the rocker arms, especially the surfaces of the rollers and shaft; also make sure the swivel pad on the lash adjuster is present; if any rocker arm indicator is worn replace assembly. For assembly, orient the shafts in such a manner that the notches are positioned upwards before fitting in the rocker arms and pedestals: thereafter, insert the new dowel pins through the pedestals to the extent they come in contact with the rocker shafts. Turn the camshaft gear clockwise until the intake valve of cylinder No. 1 opens, then install the rocker arm shaft assembly, marking the correct direction toward the head to be installed, and tighten the assembly bolts in sequence to the specified torque. In order to manual bleed air from a lash adjuster, one has to start and run the engine until it comes to normal operating temperature, un-bolt the valve cover, and take the engine through a cycle to get the specified rocker arm on the low practically virtually of the camshaft lobe. Pass a thin wire through the air bleed hole in the rocker with the check ball being pressed down and with the cams lobe featuring away from the rocker arm; if the top of the wire breaks off, the rocker arm will require replacement. With the check ball depressed, push the rocker arm as close to the valve as you can, and hold it down for about five or so seconds before slowly letting the rocker go, and removing the wire. The bleeding process should be repeated until all air or play is removed; if no progress is made the rocker arm(s) will require replacement. Last is the installation process which is carried out in the reverse sequence of the removal process.
