First of all, universal joints connect two rotating components at different angles, consisting of two yokes linked by a trunnion with needle bearings. Wear in these bearings can cause driveline vibration, noise during acceleration, or even metallic squeaking and bearing disintegration. To check for wear, turn the driveshaft while holding the axle flange or front coupling, or use a prybar to test for looseness.

Another method is to use a pry bar inserted into the gap between the universal joint and the driveshaft or flange. Leaving the vehicle in gear and trying to pry the joint both radially and axially can reveal any looseness. A final test for wear is to attempt to lift the shaft and note any movement between the yokes of the joints. If any of these conditions exist, it is recommended to replace the universal joints with new ones.

To replace universal joints, remove the driveshaft and snap-rings from the spider. Use a press or vise to force out the bearing caps. Grease the new universal joint bearings, partially install them, and press them into position. Install the snap-rings, grease fitting, and fill the joint with grease. Reinstall the driveshaft and tighten the flange bolts. Repeat for double cardan U-joints. For double offset constant velocity joints, consult a Jeep dealer.
