Q:
How to replace the ignition coil on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier models, start by detaching the cable from the negative battery terminal. Mark the wires and terminals with numbered tape, then remove the primary wires and high-tension cable from the coil. Disconnect the coil mounting bracket and remove the coil/bracket assembly. Clean the outer case and check for damage. Clean the coil primary terminals and check for corrosion. Check the coil primary resistance by attaching an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals. Check the coil secondary resistance by hooking one ohmmeter lead to the primary terminals and the other to the high-tension terminal. If the resistances are not as specified, replace the coil. Install the new coil and hook up the wires, then reattach the cable to the negative battery terminal. For 2000 through 2006 six-cylinder models, remove the ignition coil rail assembly and clean the cases. Check the coil primary resistance by connecting an ohmmeter to the coil connector terminals. Compare the measurements to the specified resistance values. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the coil rail assembly. To replace the assembly, remove the mounting bolts and carefully work the spark plug boots off the spark plugs. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil rail assembly. When installing the new coil rail, position the spark plug boots over the spark plugs and press the assembly down until the boots are seated. Install the mounting bolts and tighten them securely. Connect the electrical connector and lock it in place. For 2000 through 2006 four-cylinder and 2007 through 2011 models, locate the coil pack and mark the spark plug wires if necessary. Remove the air intake duct on four-cylinder models, then disconnect the wires from the coil pack and remove the mounting bolts. Detach the coil from its bracket and reverse the steps for installation. For 2012 and later models, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the engine cover. If removing the coils on the driver's side, remove the upper intake manifold. Unlock the connector lock and disconnect the electrical connector from the coil. Remove the bolt attaching the coil to the valve cover, then use a twisting motion to remove the coil from the spark plug. The spark plugs can now be serviced. Reverse the steps for installation.
