Q:
What is a Catalytic Converter? Posted by Customer
A:
The catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. It consists of an oxidation catalyst and a reduction catalyst, which work together to reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen. The catalyst's ability to store oxygen is crucial for its operation, and as it ages, it loses this ability. The PCM monitors the oxygen content going into and coming out of the catalyst using oxygen sensors. If the oxygen content in the catalyzed exhaust gases exceeds a specified threshold, the PCM stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code and turns on the Malfunction Indicator Light. Testing a catalytic converter requires expensive equipment, so it is recommended to take the vehicle to a dealer or authorized emissions inspection facility for diagnosis and repair. Regular inspections should be done to check for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damage to the converter. If damage is found, the converter should be replaced. A vacuum gauge can be used to check for a restricted converter by comparing the vacuum readings at idle and near full throttle. If the reading after the fourth test is significantly lower than the idle reading, the exhaust system may be restricted. To replace the catalytic converter, the vehicle should be raised and securely placed on jackstands. The downstream oxygen sensor should be removed, and penetrating oil should be sprayed on the nuts and bolts before attempting to loosen them. The clamp behind the converter should be loosened, and the nuts and bolts attaching the catalyst to the exhaust manifold should be removed. The catalytic converter can then be separated from the exhaust system. When purchasing a new unit, it is important to ensure that it is identical to the old one. Before installation, the threads of the nuts and bolts should be coated with anti-seize compound, and the fasteners should be tightened securely.
