Always check for blown fuses before diagnosing an electrical circuit problem. If the engine is overheating and the cooling fan is not coming on, unplug the fan motor electrical connector and connect it directly to the battery with fused jumper wires. If the fan motor doesn't come on, replace it. If the radiator fan motor is okay but not coming on when the engine gets hot, the fan relay might be defective. The cooling fan operation is controlled by the air conditioner running or when the coolant reaches a specified temperature determined by the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) to the PCM. The PCM turns the fan on depending on driving conditions and engine temperature. Check the relay and all wiring and connections to the fan motor. If no obvious problems are found, the issue could be the ECT sensor or the PCM. Have the cooling fan system and circuit diagnosed by a dealer service department or repair shop. To replace the fan, disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the air filter housing. Drain the cooling system if necessary. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connector and remove the upper radiator hose. Remove the upper radiator support mounts and the fan mounting screws. For 2001 and later models, remove the PCM and the air conditioning line support bracket. For all models, remove the fan assembly by lifting it from above the engine compartment. Detach the fan blade from the motor by removing the nut or retaining clip. Remove the motor from the shroud by removing the retaining nuts or screws. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the rubber air shields around the fan assembly are in place for efficient cooling system operation.
