Q:
What Are the Signs of a Failing Water Pump? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to engine damage due to overheating. If there is a failure at the pump seal, coolant will leak from the weep hole(s) on the water pump. The top weep hole is located near the pulley shaft on the water pump housing. To check for a leak, remove the lower engine splash shield and use a flashlight to look for traces of coolant residue or dried coolant tracks around the weep hole(s). If the seal has leaked, it should be easily noticeable. Additionally, if the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound near the water pump while it's running. You can also check for shaft wear by rocking the water pump pulley up-and-down with the engine off. However, be careful not to mistake drivebelt slippage for water pump bearing failure, as it causes a squealing sound. To perform a quick water pump performance check, ensure that the coolant level is full, start the vehicle and let it warm up fully, and turn on the heater in the passenger compartment. If there is little or no heat output, it may indicate a failing water pump as coolant flow does not appear to be going through the heater core. It's important to note that a water pump may still need replacement even if it's not leaking or making any noise. The only way to be sure is to remove the pump and closely examine it for a loose or corroded impeller, a leaking shaft seal, or a worn shaft bearing.

The remaining steps of installation involve reversing the removal process. Refill and bleed the cooling system after completing the installation.
