Q:
How Should I Be Particularly Careful When Servicing an Oxygen Sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
Be particularly careful when servicing an oxygen sensor. Oxygen sensors have a permanently attached pigtail and an electrical connector that cannot be removed, so damaging or removing them will render the sensor useless. Keep grease, dirt, and other contaminants away from the electrical connector and the louvered end of the sensor. Do not use cleaning solvents on an oxygen sensor. They are extremely delicate, so avoid dropping or handling them roughly. Make sure the silicone boot on the sensor is installed correctly to prevent melting and ensure proper operation. When removing the sensor, it may be difficult to loosen when the engine is cold, so start and run the engine for a minute or two before attempting removal. Use an oxygen sensor socket if available. For the upstream sensor, remove the engine cover, disconnect the wire harness mounting clips, disconnect the connector from the engine wiring harness, and remove the sensor from the exhaust pipe. For the downstream sensor, disconnect the connector mounting clips, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, disconnect the connector from the engine wiring harness, and remove the sensor from the catalytic converter. Installation is the reverse of removal.
