- A:The Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system prevents fuel system vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Vapors trapped inside the fuel tank expand on warm days and are routed through the fuel vapor vent valve and fuel vapor control valve to the EVAP canister. The canister stores the vapors until they can be consumed by the engine. The Natural Vacuum Leak Detection (NVLD) pump monitors the temperature and pressure of the fuel vapors. If there is a leak, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The EVAP canister purge solenoid regulates the flow of vapors into the intake manifold. Common symptoms of a faulty EVAP system include a strong fuel odor and poor driveability. To check for excessive fuel vapor pressure, remove the gas cap and listen for pressure release. The EVAP canister purge solenoid and NVLD pump can be replaced by disconnecting electrical connectors and hoses, and removing mounting brackets. The EVAP canister can be disconnected from hoses and mounting brackets. The NVLD pump can be removed by squeezing the locking tab and rotating it counterclockwise.Posted by MoparPartsGiant Specialist
