Since a replacement thermostat costs very little it is usually better to buy a new one rather than trying out a test; however, if you want to confirm that thermostat is faulty, consider using this process. Heat a pan of water on your kitchen stove until temperature nears that figure stated in front of it. To monitor the temperature use candy thermometer. Suspend thermometer in hot water by using wire. Valve should open up at approximately One-quarter-inch at specified temperature. In case no response with regard to change in temperatures as above or there are any abnormal appearance like those mentioned (corrosion, cracks etc.), you may replace old one with new ones.Always clean gasket seat after removing the old gasket and install gasket kit.The reverse for removal is installation of thenew thermostats.On V8 engines,thermostat puller faces downwards while on six-cylinder engines,the vent hole faces upwards.Don't forget to refill cooling system.
