On V6 engines, the thermostat is located on the lower left side of the engine and connected to a large diameter coolant hose. On VB engines, the thermostat is located at the top front area of the engine at the intake manifold and connected to a large diameter coolant hose. Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, the thermostat is probably stuck open and should be replaced. If the engine runs hot and the radiator hose leading from the thermostat to the radiator isn't hot, the thermostat is probably stuck closed and should be replaced. It is important not to drive the vehicle without a thermostat as it may cause oil sludge, excessive exhaust emissions, and fuel consumption. To replace the thermostat, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, drain the cooling system, remove the air cleaner housing, and detach the hose(s) from the thermostat housing. If the outer surface of the thermostat housing is deteriorated, it may need to be replaced. For 2.7L V6 engines, loosen the bolt at the starter motor that holds the small heater tube bracket, remove the heater tube flange mounting nuts, and remove the thermostat housing cover. For 3.5L V6 engines, disconnect the electrical connectors from the nearby engine oil and power steering pressure switches, remove the thermostat housing cover mounting fasteners, and remove the thermostat housing cover and thermostat. For 5.7L V8 (Hemi) engines, remove the thermostat housing cover fasteners and remove the cover along with the thermostat and seal. Clean all mating surfaces before reassembly and install a new gasket or seal. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system, start the engine, and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
