Q:
What Are the Inspections That Can Be Done by the Owner on a Turbocharger? Posted by Customer
A:
A turbocharger is a device that improves engine power, reduces exhaust smoke density, enhances fuel economy, decreases engine noise, and mitigates the effects of lower density air at higher altitudes. It achieves this by using an exhaust gas-driven turbine to pressurize the air entering the combustion chambers. The amount of boost is controlled by a wastegate, which is operated by a spring-loaded actuator assembly. Turbocharged models also have an intercooler, which lowers the temperature of the compressed air intake charge, resulting in increased combustion efficiency, power, and reduced emissions. While servicing should be left to a dealer service department, some inspections can be done by the owner. These include checking for a cracked turbo mounting flange, a blocked or restricted oil supply line, a worn out or overheated turbine/compressor shaft bearing, or a defective wastegate actuator. Changes in the quality or quantity of noise from the turbocharger can indicate potential problems, but it's important to inspect the exhaust manifold and connections before assuming the turbocharger is at fault. If an unusual sound is heard, the engine should be turned off and allowed to cool completely, and the intake duct between the air cleaner housing and the turbocharger should be removed to check if the compressor wheel spins freely. The turbocharger is lubricated by pressurized, cooled, and filtered engine oil. It is delivered through a supply line and lubricates the shaft and bearings in the turbocharger's bearing housing. A return pipe routes the oil back to the crankcase. It is crucial to check for leaks in the oil supply line and tighten any fittings if necessary. If the supply line itself is leaking, it should be replaced. The oil return line should also be inspected for obstructions, as a blocked return line can cause oil loss through the turbocharger seals. Burned oil on the turbine housing is a sign of a blocked return line.
