Q:
How to Replace EGR Valve? Posted by Customer
A:
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are compounds formed in combustion chambers when oxygen and nitrogen in incoming air mix at high temperatures. NOx, a byproduct of high combustion chamber temperatures, mixes with reactive organic compounds (ROCs), hydrocarbons (HC), and sunlight to form ozone and photochemical smog. The EGR system reduces NOx emissions by recirculating exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold through the EGR valve and intake manifold back to the combustion chambers, diluting the air/fuel mixture and cooling the combustion chambers. All engines covered use an EGR system, consisting of the PCM, EGR valve, and various information sensors (ECT, TP, MAP, IAT, RPM, and VSS) that the PCM uses to determine EGR valve opening. The EGR valve has a position feedback circuit and a pintle position sensor to control the pintle precisely. Too much or too little EGR flow can lead to engine issues like rough idling or engine overheating. Component replacement involves removing the EVAP purge solenoid valve and disconnecting electrical connectors before replacing the EGR valve, lower EGR pipe (for 2.7L engine), and upper EGR pipe. New gaskets and seals should be used during installation, and proper torque should be applied to mounting bolts. The EGR system also exists in V8 engines with similar replacement procedures for the EGR valve and EGR pipe.
