The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by scavenging crankcase vapors. It does this by circulating fresh air from the air filter housing through the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases, before being drawn through a PCV valve into the intake manifold. The PCV system consists of the PCV valve and two hoses. The fresh air inlet hose connects the air filter housing to the valve cover (2.4L four) or to the front valve cover (3.3U3.8L V6). The crankcase ventilation hose (or PCV hose) connects the valve cover (2.4L four) or the rear valve cover (3.3L/3.8L V6) to the intake manifold. The PCV valve is located at the valve cover end of the crankcase ventilation hose that connects to the intake manifold. To maintain idle quality, the PCV valve restricts the flow when the intake manifold vacuum is high. If abnormal operating conditions (such as piston ring problems) arise, the system is designed to allow excessive amounts of blow-by gases to flow back through the crankcase vent tube into the air cleaner to be consumed by normal combustion. Checking and replacement of the PCV valve are necessary processes to maintain the system's functionality.

To check the PCV valve's operation, with the engine running at idle, pull the valve out of the mount and place your finger over the valve inlet. A strong vacuum should be felt, and a hissing noise should be heard if the valve is operating properly.
