How to remove a Rack and Pinion steering gear on Dodge Avenger?

Pull your car up and set the wheels right in front of you. Unplug the negative battery cable either from the battery terminal or at the remote ground terminal. Drain as much steering fluid as you can from the power pump. Slowly turn the wheel nuts, lift your vehicle with the jack, put draft stops under its body, and take off your wheels. After aligning the steering wheel to the right, take out the one bolt that holds the middle shaft. Mount the steering wheel in its original position and ensure it is safe to drive, then disconnect the section connecting the steering input to the gear mechanism. Loosen and take off both connection parts that join the steering knuckles to the tie rods. Take out the bolt holding the rear engine mount. Remove the longitudinal crossmember. Loosen and remove the brackets that attach the power steering hose on the crossmember. Loosen tube nut on the return line connected to the Rack And Pinion and take it off. Simplest way to detach the Rack And Pinion door is to loosen the tube nut connected to the pressure line. Drop the screws that keep the Rack And Pinion heat shield in place and take off the shield. Remove the subframe. First remove the firewall seals, then take out the bolts joining the Rack And Pinion to the subframe before removing the Rack And Pinion itself. Installation is the reverse of removal, taking note of the following points: When installing a fresh Rack And Pinion, set it straight first by turning the input shaft clockwise until it can move no further. Then turn the same input shaft counterclockwise until it rests, then count how long it took to stop. Turn your input shaft right 2/3 of the counts that you noted earlier. Install the mounting bolts and tighten them. Put the indexes from the steering shaft and coupler together before placing the bolt in the coupler. Screw the fluid hoses into their right places on the Rack And Pinion and lock them with firm turns. Fasten the engine mount bolt and tighten the crossmember bolts and reinforcement structures. Install the wheels and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts. Add the right steering fluid to the power steering pump reservoir, then let all excess air escape from the steering system. Check your front wheel alignment and fix it if there are any issues.
