Before the piston and connecting rod assemblies can be removed all the cylinder head and oil pan should be raised off. First of all, it is necessary to look for any gradual corrugations at the upper limit of ring travel in the cylinder, which, if present, must be rubbed out by a special tool since the failure to do can result in piston failure. After clearing the ridges with a 90-degrees angle piece lay the engine with the
Crankshaft upwards and measure the connecting rod end play with the feeler gauges to ensure it lies within the standard ones. It is easy to confuse the connecting rod and caps so it is better to label them properly and then gradually use a spanner to loosen the bolts of the connecting rod cap so as to take off the cap entirely. Carefully, unscrew the connecting rod cap and the bearing insert, extrude the connecting rod and piston assembly through the top of the engine, all the ridges should be taken out. However, all assemblies should be removed and proper caps and inserts should be reassembled to avoid any damage. When fitting piston rings, measure the end gaps and set appropriately to the standards allowed for the car model. Its installation begins with the 'oil control ring' and then the two rings, in the right order with the correct positioning. Before placing the assemblies, the cylinder walls should be polished and the edge of the cylinders chamfered; the piston as well as the rings should be lubricated before the piston rings are placed in the cylinder by a ring compressor. The checking of connecting rod bearing oil clearance can be done by using the Plastigage and there should not be any oil on the bearing and journal surfaces. After clearing, lubricate the bearing faces and put on the new rod cap bolts to the required torque. Concentrate on cleanliness and orientation of the remaining assemblies in a similar manner to what has been done above. Last but not the least, rotate the crankshaft to ensure it's not binding and to ensure that the connecting rod has the right amount of end play and adjust it accordingly if they are not as required.
