Attention, Safety measures should be adhered to while handling gasoline. The engine block has one mechanical fuel pump which is single-acting and located on the lower right side for six-cylinder engines and at the right front area for V8 engines. These fuel pumps are not rebuildable because they are permanently sealed. Fuel pumps work by mechanical action from a rocker arm connected to the pump, and moved by a lobe that rotates along the camshaft. Before you think of replacing your fuel pump, inspect all your fuel lines, filters and hoses. First, remove the fuel line from the carburetor then disconnect high tension lead from ignition coil in order to test it. Have someone crank the engine while you hold a container at the disconnected end of pipe so as to check if any petrol squirts out well enough. Use a pressure gauge with a flexible hose to connect between the fuelling line and carburetor for tests involving pressures only. Prime starter till such time as fuel comes out of vent hole then start and keep watching pressure gauge indication as engine runs. To determine volume attach flexible tubing leading to graduated container into T-fitting of fuel line. Start up an engine with valve shut or restrictor in place thereby allowing fuel run into its vessel when restrictor is opened once more . Find out quantity of liquid at fixed experiment time matching this result against specification values. If flow rate does not meet criteria install another auxiliary supply system on inlet side of pump followed by repetition test. If large amounts still fail to materialize hence change whole pump unit immediately.
