Terminal 30 mostly joins the battery voltage supply to the circuit loads while terminal 87 joins the ground side of the circuit load. For continuity check through the relay control coil, an ohmmeter can be employed and care has to be taken to connect as per the polarity and reversing the leads for a second measurement is also done. If a resistor is present, the situation should be identical: resistivity in both directions should be the same, although if a diode is in use, it will behave differently: much higher resistance in one or another direction. When, and only when, there is an infinite resistance in both directions does it mean that the relay must be replaced. After the relay is removed, continuity between the terminals of power circuit should be examined and there should be no continuity between terminal 30 and 87 when it is de-energized. Applying a fused jumper from terminal '86' to the positive terminal of battery, and another from terminal '85' to any ground point should cause the relay to snap. With the jumper wires connected the continuity between the power circuit terminals will exist between terminals 30 & 87. Any of these tests if not passed by the relay, then the relay deserves to be replaced.
