    Q:
How to remove the cylinder heads with the camshaft and exhaust manifold still attached in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following procedure outlines how one is to perform the removal of the cylinder heads with the camshaft(s and exhaust manifold(s,) still in place. Start with the elimination of the intake manifold then the timing chains, the sprockets, and guides. Lift rear of vehicle and support safely on jackstands then just loosen nuts/bolts on exhaust pipes and manifolds will do. Remove any other components which may be still connected to the cylinder head and label them appropriately, this may include coolant fittings, ground straps, cables, hoses, wires or brackets. One must use the breaker bar in combination with the appropriate sized socket to turn the cylinder head bolts in 1/4 turn increments until they can actually be turned by hand; this is done while working in reverse of the tightening sequence to avoid warping or cracking of the bolts. Remove the cylinder head with its camshaft installed and with the exhaust manifold connected to it, and assist it upward somewhat if it is stuck. Remember to strip off all externals accessories within the head for cleaning processes and checkups. Checking whether the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block are correctly adjusted for flatness to the gasket surface or not; there should also be no trace of carbon and old gasket sticking on the surfaces and if so, then use a gasket scraper and clean the block and cylinder head with lacquer thinner or acetone. But before the block can be mated with the head, its surfaces together with the head mating surfaces should be inspected for damages and if the damages are slight, then a file might be used but where the damages are too much, then it may be necessary to have the block machined. Run a tap through the threads in at the head bolt holes and clean with compressed air while wearing safety glasses. Apply the straightedge on each cylinder head bolt and if it appears that it has stretched replace it. Visually and by feel check for cylinder head warpage, and examine head gasket, intake, and exhaust manifold surfaces. Replace any parts cut from the head, place the new cylinder head gasket over the dowels on block and gently lower the head over the dowels so as not to move the gasket. Use a small quantity of clean engine oil on the threads of the M10 head bolts and at the same time ensure that the chamfer side of the hardened washers is directed towards the bolt heads, while for the M8 head bolt a thread sealant should be applied on them. Bolts must be replaced in their initial position, snug them with fingers only, afterward apply the correct procedure to the prescribed torque and rotation degree. The timing chain guides, timing chains, and timing chain sprockets should now be fitted, further to which fills the cooling system and changes the engine oil and filter. Last but not least, crank up and look for traces of oil and coolant dripping out.

    Q:
How to remove and install a cylinder head in 3.6L V6 engine on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
To work with the cylinder head, the first thing to do is switch off the car by unscrewing the cable from the battery's negative terminal and also drain the engine oil and cooler fluid. Take off the drivebelt, air filter housing, resonator and the intake manifolds. Detatching the wires and vacuum hose from the cylinder head then tagging them so as they can be fitted again easily. Remove the ignition coils, then the spark plugs, the catalytic converter, if the car has it or more than one, and the valve covers. Add cheek, unthread the crankshaft balancer and the oil pans. On the left side of the hull, you should remove an alternator, an oil dipstick tube, an air compressor and turn off all main engine harness connectors. For the right cylinder head, unbolt the power steering pump adapter and also the heater core tube. Take off timing chain cover, turn the crankshaft clockwise to get the #1 piston at the top on the exhaust stroke, make sure the cam phaser arrow are position properly. Depend on the degree of the operation, but you will have to take out the timing chain, oil control valves, timing chain tensioner, chain guides, camshafts, rocker arms and lash adjusters; however, be certain to keep the rocker arms and the lash adjusters aligned. Unfasten the cylinder head bolts in reverse sequence to the pattern in which it was tightened then lift off the cylinder head from the block gently but firmly using a wood block enhanced with a hammer though avoiding harm on the cylinder head or block. The cylinder head should also be checked and serviced from a worthy automotive machine shop. For installation, it is required to clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the engine block using a gasket scraper and brake cleaner where necessary. Coat and pack the lifter valley with shop rags in order to avoid mixing of debris with the engine oil and ensure the surfaces are not damaged. Align the new gasket over the dowel pins, return the cylinder head to the engine block gently and start using new cylinder head bolts; do not over tighten while following a sequence of steps that might require the cylinder head to be rotated beyond the required tightness. Last of all, reattach the other parts in the reverse manner, replace the engine oil and its filter, fill in the cooling system, crank up the engine, and examine for any signs of leakage and functionality.
