Q:
How Difficult Is It to Remove a Heater Core on Dodge Ram 1500 and Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Heater core removal is a challenging task for home mechanics. It requires careful attention to detail as there are many difficult-to-reach fasteners and wiring connectors behind the instrument panel. The entire instrument panel must be removed to access and remove the heater/air conditioning unit from the vehicle. Before starting the removal process, the air conditioning system must be discharged, the battery cable(s) must be disconnected, and the cooling system must be drained. The heater hoses at the firewall and the air conditioning lines must be disconnected. The nuts retaining the heater housing on the firewall in the engine compartment must be removed, and in some cases, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may need to be removed for access. The instrument panel and, if applicable, the air duct to the center console must be removed. If equipped, the rear floor air ducts must also be removed. The lower bolt and two nuts retaining the heater housing must be removed, followed by the complete heater housing assembly. The foam insulator from the water pipe flange must be removed, and then the flange can be detached. Finally, the heater core can be removed from the housing. When installing the heater core, ensure that all foam seals are in place on the heater core and evaporator coil tubes. Slide the heater core into the housing, engage the tab, and secure it with screws. Reinstall all the components in the reverse order of removal, being careful not to pinch any wiring harnesses between the body and the housing. Refill the cooling system, start the engine, and check for proper operation. Finally, have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested by a professional shop.
