Q:
What Is Involved in Brake line Inspection and Replacement? Posted by Customer
A:
Brake hose inspection involves raising the vehicle securely on jackstands and thoroughly inspecting the rubber hoses that connect the steel brake lines with the front and rear brake assemblies for cracks, chafing, leaks, blisters, and other damage. A light and mirror can be helpful for a complete check. If any hose exhibits these conditions, it should be replaced immediately. When replacing the flexible hose, the dirt should be cleaned away from the hose and line fittings. The metal brake line should be disconnected from the hose fitting using a flare-nut wrench, and the metal line should be plugged to prevent leakage and contamination. The clip retaining the brake hose to the bracket should be removed, and the bolt retaining the brake hose bracket to the strut should be removed as well. The banjo bolt at the caliper should be unscrewed, and the hose should be removed, discarding the sealing washers. The new brake hose should be attached to the caliper, ensuring the use of new sealing washers. The banjo bolt should be tightened to the specified torque, and the brake hose bracket should be attached to the strut, making sure the hose isn't kinked or twisted. The hose should then be connected to the bracket on the chassis, and the retaining clip should be installed. The metal line should be connected to the hose fitting, tightening the fitting securely. The same steps should be followed for the rear brake hose replacement. It is important to check that the suspension or steering components do not make contact with the hose, and the brake operation should be carefully tested before resuming normal operation. When replacing metal brake lines, it is crucial to use the correct parts and not copper tubing. Prefabricated brake lines with flared tube ends and installed fittings can be bent to the proper shapes using a tubing bender. The new line should be well supported in the brackets and have sufficient clearance between moving or hot components. The fittings should be tightened securely. After installation, the master cylinder fluid level should be checked and fluid should be added if necessary. The brakes should be bled, and brake operation should be carefully tested before resuming normal operation.
