Remove the coolant reservoir tank, right side engine mount, engine mount block from the water pump, lower engine cover, right front wheel, inner fender splash shield, drivebelt, idler pulley, air conditioning compressor, bypass and lower radiator hoses, and water pump mounting bolts.

Drain the cooling system. Remove the drivebelt. For the 3.6L engine, disconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector and remove the air filter housing. Disconnect the heater and radiator hoses at the water pump. Remove the idler pulley mounting bolt and idler pulley. Remove the water pump mounting bolts, making sure to identify the four bolts that bolt directly to the timing chain cover. Remove the pump and discard the gasket. For the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines, detach the engine-mounted viscous fan assembly from the water pump. Remove the radiator-mounted electric fan. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump. For the 5.7L and 6.4L Hemi engine, remove the air filter housing, the air inlet ducts, and the resonator brackets. Remove the fan assembly. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine. For the 6.7L diesel engine, remove the air filter housing and the air intake pipe. Remove the alternator. For all engines, remove the bolts and detach the water pump from the engine.

Yes, sometimes the fins on the back of the impeller can corrode away until the pump is no longer effective. The only way to check for this is to remove the pump for examination.
