    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to replace the Crankshaft Seal in a 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Dakota? Posted by Customer
    A:
Both of these models use a single piece rear Crankshaft Seal located between the engine block and the lower main bearing cap assembly, commonly referred to as a 'bed plate.' To change this seal, the transmission and flywheel/driveplate have to be taken off the engine. They range in size and can be removed by carefully inserting a flat head screw driver on one of the faces of the seal and gently prying until it can be pulled off with fingers or by a puller taking care not to mar the crank shaft face; one can use a seal puller. Before installing the new seal, the seal bore in the block can be wiped clean with a shop towel so that there will be no remnant oil and dirt on the bore. The seal lip should be coated with clean engine oil before positioning the seal on top of the crankshaft end and the lip must face the engine. A recommended tool for refitting a new seal is a seal installation tool to push it back and fit it squarely into the seal bore with the rear of the engine block. The remaining steps of installation are to reverse the sequence of removal.

    Q:
How is the Crankshaft Seal Installed in a Four-Cylinder Engine on Dodge Nitro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The one-piece rear Crankshaft Seal is pressed into a bore machined into the rear main bearing cap and engine block. Begin by removing the transmission and, if equipped, the clutch components. Next, take out the flywheel or driveplate. Ensure the Crankshaft Seal is installed flush with the outer surface of the block. Using the chamfered edge on the crankshaft, carefully pry out the old seal with a 3/16-inch flat blade screwdriver, taking care not to nick or scratch the crankshaft or seal bore. To prevent an oil leak after installing the new seal, avoid damaging the crankshaft sealing surface or the bore in the engine block. Clean the crankshaft and seal bore thoroughly, de-greasing these areas with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner or acetone. If there are any burrs or scratches on the crankshaft chamfer edge, sand them with 400-grit sandpaper. Do not lubricate the lip or outer diameter of the new seal; it must be installed as it comes from the manufacturer. Position the new seal onto the crankshaft, ensuring that the words "THIS SIDE OUT" face out toward the rear of the vehicle. If the seal is unmarked, the seal lip must face in. Using an appropriate size driver and pilot tool, gently and gradually drive the seal into the cylinder block until it is flush with the outer surface, being cautious not to drive it past flush to avoid an oil leak. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.

    Q:
What are the essential precautions for installing a new crankshaft seal in a 4.0L V6 engine on Jeep Liberty? Posted by Customer
    A:
The rear crankshaft Crankshaft Seal and retainer are an assembly. When installing a new seal assembly, do not separate the seal protector from the crankshaft Crankshaft Seal before installation onto the engine, as damage to the seal lip will occur if the seal protector is removed. Begin by removing the engine oil pan. Lower the weight of the engine back onto the engine mounts. Next, remove the transmission. After that, remove the rear seal retaining bolts and then take off the seal retainer. Clean the crankshaft Crankshaft Seal and retainer surfaces. Mount special tool #8225 to the oil pan surface using the oil pan mounting bolts. Install the oil seal retainer over the end of the crankshaft and onto the engine block, firmly pressing the retainer into place to ensure it is seated against the special tool. Install the mounting bolt and tighten the bolts to the specified torque value. The remaining installation follows the reverse order of removal. Finally, refill the engine with oil.

    Q:
How should the new Crankshaft Seal be driven into the bore for the 2006 Dodge Durango? Posted by Customer
    A:
Drive the seal into the bore using a seal driver or a large socket and hammer until it is completely seated, ensuring the socket matches the outside diameter of the seal and that the new seal is pressed into place until it bottoms against the cover flange.
