Q:
How Should I Be Particularly Careful When Servicing an Oxygen Sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
Be particularly careful when servicing an oxygen sensor. Oxygen sensors have a permanently attached pigtail and an electrical connector that cannot be removed, so damaging or removing them will render the sensor useless. Keep grease, dirt, and other contaminants away from the electrical connector and the louvered end of the sensor, and do not use cleaning solvents on it. Oxygen sensors are extremely delicate, so avoid dropping or handling them roughly. Make sure the silicone boot on the sensor is installed correctly to prevent melting and ensure proper operation. When removing the sensor, it may be difficult to loosen when the engine is cold, so start and run the engine for a minute or two before attempting removal. Use an oxygen sensor socket if available. For the 2.4L engine (2014 and earlier), the upstream sensor is located near the exhaust manifold, while on all other engines, the left and right upstream sensors are located at the top of the catalytic converters. The downstream sensors are located on the side of each catalytic converter. To remove the sensor, disconnect the oxygen sensor wire harness mounting clips, disconnect the oxygen sensor connector from the engine wiring harness, and remove the sensor from the exhaust pipe or catalytic converter. For V6 engines, raise the vehicle and disconnect the electrical lead from the oxygen sensor, then unscrew the sensor using a special oxygen sensor socket. Clean the threads of the sensor bore if reusing the old sensor, and apply anti-seize compound to the threads if necessary. Install the sensor and tighten it to the specified torque. For the 2.4L engine (2015 and later), trace the electrical lead from the upstream or downstream oxygen sensor to the electrical connector and disconnect it. Remove the wiring harness metal protector piece if equipped, then unscrew the sensor using a special oxygen sensor socket. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads if necessary, and install the sensor following the specified torque.

Q:
What does the oxygen sensor in the exhaust system do for the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
A:
The oxygen sensor in the exhaust system reacts with the elements to produce a voltage output that varies based on the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. This feedback signal is used by the PCM to determine the required fuel injector pulse width and control the air/fuel ratio.
