Q:
How Should Special Care Be Taken When Servicing an Oxygen Sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
Special care must be taken when servicing an oxygen sensor. The pigtail and electrical connector of the sensor are permanently attached and cannot be removed without damaging the sensor. It is important to keep grease, dirt, and other contaminants away from the electrical connector and the louvered end of the sensor. Cleaning solvents should not be used on the sensor. Rough handling or dropping of the sensor should be avoided. When replacing the sensor, it is recommended to start and run the engine for a short period of time to loosen it. The cable should be disconnected from the negative terminal of the battery and the vehicle should be raised and securely placed on jackstands. The upstream oxygen sensor is located on top of the exhaust manifold for 2.4L four-cylinder engines and on top of the rear exhaust manifold for 3.3L/3.8L V6 engines. The electrical lead should be traced and disconnected from the upstream oxygen sensor, and then the sensor can be unscrewed using a special oxygen sensor socket. After removing the old sensor, the threads of the sensor bore in the exhaust manifold should be cleaned. If reusing the old sensor, anti-seize compound should be applied to the threads for future removal. If installing a new sensor, anti-seize compound is not necessary as the threads already have it. The upstream oxygen sensor should be installed and tightened securely. The process for replacing the downstream oxygen sensor is similar, with the sensor located on the side of the catalytic converter. The electrical lead should be traced and disconnected, and then the sensor can be unscrewed. The threads of the sensor bore in the catalytic converter should be cleaned, and if reusing the old sensor, anti-seize compound should be applied to the threads. If installing a new sensor, anti-seize compound is not necessary. The downstream oxygen sensor should be installed and tightened securely. The installation process is the reverse of removal for both sensors.
